Laurent Mazzone: Exclusive interview at the launch of Pistache
Discover “Pistache”, Laurent Mazzone's new gourmet fragrance. Exclusive interview with LM Parfums creator on pistachio perfume, its creation, craftsmanship and family taboos.
Mysterious, refined and audacious, Laurent Mazzone is one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary artistic perfumery. After a long experience in the fashion world, where he reinterpreted dark aesthetics with pure cuts and noble materials, he has brought his vision to the olfactory universe, creating fragrances with a strong identity and authentic soul. His Les Eaux Pures collection is a declaration of intent: essentiality, purity, craftsmanship. This is the background to Pistache, a gourmand eau de parfum that sublimates simplicity into sophistication.
In this exclusive interview, Mazzone takes us behind the scenes of Pistache's creation, revealing the philosophy, emotion and research behind each of its notes.
Where did the idea come from to dedicate a fragrance to pistachios, an ingredient as simple as it is evocative?
"In Italy, I was having lunch on a terrace with a close friend in Bordighera. I tasted a pistachio dessert, which inspired me to create a new fragrance".
The fragrance opens with creamy pistachio and develops into notes of cocoa, coffee, white flowers and sweet woods. How did you build this harmonious, elegant olfactory pyramid?
“I developed an idea around pistachios, roasted coffee beans and whipped cream.”
Your Les Eaux Pures collection is an ode to essentiality. What role does the pistachio play in this line? What does it bring to the overall olfactory narrative?
“It gives this collection a mouth-watering note.”
You often speak of “slow gestures” and “conscious craftsmanship”. How are these values reflected in Pistache's creative process?
"With Pistache, our ‘slow gestures’ are expressed through respect for the time involved in creation: no rushing, just listening to the raw material. The pistachios are delicately worked to highlight their naturalness, without artifice. Conscious craftsmanship is reflected in the noble choice of materials and attention to detail. Each note has been carefully composed to offer an authentic fragrance that celebrates the beauty of time and simplicity".
In the world of niche perfumery, extreme originality is often the order of the day. In Pistache, on the other hand, the balance is striking. Is it difficult today to create a striking fragrance without shouting?
"Yes, it is. With Pistache, we wanted to emphasize the balance of the accords, to create a subtle emotion that imposes itself delicately, letting the materials express themselves naturally and elegantly. It's a difficult balancing act, but one that offers a hushed refinement rare in contemporary perfumery".
What emotions should pistachio arouse on the skin of its wearer?
“Gourmandise, childlike pleasure, almost regressive”.
The fragrance is described as “a caress for the soul”. Who would you recommend it to? What type of person is it for?
"We think Pistache is for everyone, without exception. It's a fragrance designed to accompany a moment of sweetness, at any time of day, according to each person's mood and sensitivity. It doesn't impose itself, but rather lets you discover it naturally, like a reassuring interlude, an intimate gesture to be freely offered.
What do you think distinguishes a perfume with character from a simple scented product?
"What sets a distinctive fragrance apart is not necessarily its intensity or strength. It’s an olfactory signature — subtle, yet unforgettable."
In your creative journey, fashion and perfumery intertwine. What is the common thread between these two worlds?
"Elegance, eccentricity, creativity, emotion, message."
If you had to define Pistache in one word, which would you choose?
"A caress."
And finally, our signature question from the “A Coffee With” series: how do you take your coffee, and with whom would you share it?
"Laurent Mazzone enjoys his coffee with a sweet treat — pistachio, of course, his favorite. He often shares it with his best friend: a small, joyful pleasure to savor together."
